Newcastle Airport has announced its biggest-ever flight schedule, marking a major step forward in its £60 million expansion programme.

The airport expects to welcome six million passengers this year, helped by the launch of 19 new routes. Travellers can now book flights to popular destinations including Lisbon, Porto, Nice, Palermo and Preveza. Returning services will also reconnect the North East with cities such as Berlin, Copenhagen and Enfidha.

Airlines easyJet and Jet2 will operate the new routes, with seasonal flights running from March through November.

Leon McQuaid, Director of Aviation Development at Newcastle Airport, said the investment is bringing both travel opportunities and economic growth to the region. The expansion is expected to create 130 direct jobs and support around 1,200 roles across the UK.

With more than 750 additional flights planned, the airport is forecasting a 10% rise in passenger numbers during the upcoming half-term. Looking ahead, Newcastle Airport aims to handle nine million passengers annually by 2040.

The growth plans also include major upgrades to the terminal, improved security areas and a larger departures lounge all designed to enhance the passenger experience.

The developments were reported by The WP Times, citing Newcastle Airport.

Expanded Flight Network Boosts Travel Options

Newcastle Airport is expanding its European network with a wave of new and returning routes to some of the continent’s most sought-after destinations.

Among the new additions are Lisbon and Porto in Portugal, Nice in France, Palermo in Italy, and Preveza in Greece. The airport is also bringing back connections to Berlin, Copenhagen, and Enfidha in Tunisia giving travellers even more choice for city breaks and sunshine escapes.

easyJet will begin flights to Nice from March 2026, alongside Malta in the summer season and Faro between March and October. The airline is also launching new routes to Lisbon from June 22 and Rome Fiumicino from March 30, with services operating on Mondays and Fridays.

Meanwhile, Jet2 will introduce flights to Preveza starting in May, as well as weekly summer services to Palermo from the same month.

Strong Demand and Growing Passenger Numbers

The airport expects around 120,000 passengers during the upcoming half-term, a 10% increase compared to last year.

More than 750 flights will operate across the break, serving popular holiday hotspots such as Alicante, Antalya, Dubai, and Tenerife. Winter sports destinations including Chambery, Grenoble, and Geneva are also proving popular with families heading for the slopes.

Leon McQuaid, Director of Aviation Development, said:

“Lisbon is a brand-new destination from Newcastle Airport and one we’ve been keen to deliver for the region on the back of strong customer demand and feedback.”

£60 Million Investment in Passenger Experience

The expanded route network forms part of a £60 million investment program designed to improve the overall passenger experience. Planned upgrades include additional check-in desks, self-service bag drop facilities, expanded seating areas, upgraded toilets, new food and drink outlets, and a larger international arrivals hall.

With growing demand and continued investment, Newcastle Airport is positioning itself as an increasingly important gateway for travellers across the North East.

Terminal Upgrades Enhance Passenger Experience

The three-storey terminal expansion at Newcastle Airport will significantly enhance the passenger experience.

The development includes a brand-new security search area, extra check-in counters, and a larger departures lounge. Travellers can also expect more seating, improved toilet facilities, and a wider range of dining options.

International arrivals will benefit from a redesigned baggage hall, created to improve passenger flow and reduce waiting times.

These upgrades form part of the airport’s long-term strategy to handle nine million passengers a year by 2040 while ensuring a smooth and efficient journey for both leisure and business travellers.

Airlines and Seasonal Highlights

easyJet’s summer schedule from Newcastle Airport features routes to Lisbon, Rome, Malta and Faro, offering travellers a mix of city breaks and beach destinations. Meanwhile, Jet2 is focusing on popular Mediterranean hotspots Palermo and Preveza.

These seasonal services will operate from March through November, aligning with peak travel demand. The return of routes to Berlin, Copenhagen and Enfidha also ensures continued access to well-established and popular destinations.

With this expanded network, Newcastle Airport is strengthening its role as a key gateway for European and Mediterranean travel, catering to holidaymakers, business travellers and families alike.
